WRITING AND ENJOYING HAIKU
A Hands-on Guide
by Jane Reichhold

Here you can read of how the work of writers has changed since reading this book.

From Christo Rigakos:

"I'd like to say that following your checklist from Writing and Enjoying Haiku, has helped me polish up an old haiku I wrote many years ago.  The very first haiku I ever wrote was:

      two empty chairs
      facing each other
      in silent conversation

After running down your checklist, I revised this as follows:

      in silence
      facing each other
      empty chairs

I killed off the personification of "conversation".  Chairs don't converse.  I think the imagery of two empty chairs facing each other shows shasei, and the addition of "in silence" hints at what is NOT there -"conversation", and in a roundabout way sheds some light on this missing thing which comes as close as possible to my original idea without the wordiness of the original haiku.
